Handlist and Index to Surrey Cases and Depositions in the Court of Requests C1500-1624
Compiled by Cliff Webb.
The Court of requests was established as the 'court of the poor man' and was intended to hear cases which were too trivial to go to the other courts. It is first mentioned in 1483 and seems to have evolved from an informal committee of the king's Council. It continued to sit until 1642, but was not revived after the Restoration.

City of London Settlement Examination
Volume I - St Botolph Aldgate, 1742-1868 abstracted and indexed by Cliff Webb, who writes in the introduction: 'St Botolph Aldgate is a large but poor parish with a highly transient population. There are only a few Huguenots in the records but quite a few Jewish people, Irish, Scots and other early immigrants. For civil purposes St Botolph was divided into two parts, each with separate civil jurisdiction. The two parts were St Botolph Aldgate, Middlesex (Without) and St Botolph Aldgate, London (Within), the latter being the portion of the parish within the old City walls. The records herein pertain to both parts of St Botolph Aldgate' (4662 Records - 11672 names).

Ryde's Book of Reference to his Horsell Parish Survey of 1851
Transcribed and compiled by John Craig.
This survey was carried out by the Order of the Board of Guardians of the Chertsey Union - which included the Parish of Horsell. Edward Ryde, a surveyor, from Old Woking was the contractor. Ryde did similar work for several others nearby parishes. The purpose seems to do with valuations after the replacement of tithes in kind by an annual cash fee. The outcome was a large scale map (25 inches to the mile) which shows, and numbers, every plot of land. The accompanying Book of Reference lists the owner, the occupier, its name or use, the state of cultivation (for agricultural land), and its area. The map, cut up into 17 pages, and the Book of Reference are held at the Surrey History Centre with the references 6198/11/188 and 6198/11/189 respectively.
